No, a Childcare Worker is NOT just a Babysitter
There are tons of opinions out there in the world about those who work in childcare and who teach very young children. A lot of them are wrong.
We are not babysitters, we do not just sit around and let kids play. Many childcare facilities have set curriculum with clearly defined roles that teach your children how to be functioning adults with healthy self-esteem and the ability to think critically. Yes we wipe butts and noses, change diapers, and make them take naps, but we also play a vital role in forming the minds of your young children.
For example, today your child was feeling abandoned and left alone and their teacher helped remind them that they’re there because their parent loved them enough to give them a place where they can learn how to be a person. That work is necessary and they still are very loved. Your child was taught the steps to getting ready in the morning or what the word “receive” means.
Also, principles of nutrition were taught with the food your child ate today. Most if not all daycares give a balanced meal and at least two snacks. Each of which was designed to give the child a great balance of carbs and protein, vegetables and fruit.
Your child played with their classmates and were coached in how to resolve conflict and still be friends at the end of the day. Time is spent learning how to be respectful of boundaries and how to relate appropriately to adults. Yes, hard questions were most likely answered in the most tactful way.
We are often surrogate parents to those who need us to be there for their children when they can’t, because of work, doctor appointments, and so many other things. Don’t relegate us to the “well they just sit around and watch kids all day with no intellectual input” domain. Nope, we work our butts off supervising multiple children in varying stages of development and teach them how not to hurt their friends and to love their families, learn how to read, and be a civil person.
Babysitters are great, and I’m not knocking their role, because it is very important. I personally babysit and educate children, so I know the difference between them. It is a huge honor to be responsible for the health and welfare of your child during the week and I am so happy I get to help create the wonderful artists and creators of the future.
Tell your child’s teacher thank you today. It might make her day!
